Endocrinology is the study of hormones and how they control different body systems. Unfortunately, sometimes hormone levels become out of balance. When that occurs, disease may result. Some common feline and canine endocrine (hormonal) disorders include Addison’s disease (underfunctioning adrenal disease), Cushing’s disease (overfunctioning adrenal gland), hyperthyroidism (overfunctioning thyroid gland), hypothyroidism (underfunctioning thyroid gland), and pet diabetes.
Since many endocrine disorders are chronic and require lifelong care, accurate diagnosis and awareness of the latest veterinary research is critical. This is where Carlson Animal Hospital’s commitment to stay abreast of the latest research and breakthroughs in veterinary medicine greatly assists pet owners. In the case of veterinary endocrinology, we work with experts at the University of Tennessee and Michigan State University.
Care of diabetes and other chronic endocrine diseases requires both advanced knowledge in veterinary medicine and an informed, committed owner. Utilizing the most recent research, we will partner with you to determine the best course of treatment, based on your pet’s needs and lifestyle.
Many hormonal imbalances present as abnormalities within the skin, such as hair loss or hair thinning, weight loss, increased water consumption, increased urination, vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, or alterations in appetite.
During your pet’s annual examination, we will conduct a thorough history and physical exam. If any of the above or other medical conditions are suspected, we will advise the most appropriate path to uncover and treat any abnormalities.
